We have launched 30° is enough!

During an early January morning, 30° is enough!, an initiative created by Electrolux and implemented in collaboration with various partners, was finally launched. The launch event took place at the prestigious KA Almgren Sidenväveri in Stockholm and was moderated by fashion expert Emilia de Poret. Guests also got to listen to Electrolux VP of Sustainability Sarah Schaeffer, psychologist Björn Hedensjö and climate psychologist Kata Nylén.

30˚ is enough! is a long-term communication project and initiative created by us at Electrolux. The project is based on the extensive mapping we have done of the impact of our washing habits on the lifespan of garments and, in the next step, the climate impact of washing.

We are getting better and better in Sweden at making conscious choices when it comes to consumption and sustainability. But in one area we still have a lot to learn – how we wash our clothes. We wash our clothes and textiles using too high temperatures. This means that we consume an unnecessary amount of energy and that we shorten the lifespan of our garments.

When we look at the reasons why we wash at such high temperatures in Sweden, our research shows that it is a combination of different factors. Inherited habits are one (often from a time when both detergents and washing machines worked differently than today’s advanced alternatives), misconceptions about what is required to wash clothes clean are another. Many people look at the care label on the garment. It is also very common to simply choose the standard setting on the washing machine.

The fact is that in most cases, 30 degrees is enough for our regular everyday laundry to get clean, and if we go from 40 degrees or 60 degrees for the regular wash, our garments can live significantly longer and we consume less energy. But more about this in upcoming blog posts where we will share both interesting figures and smart tips and advice!
